​USW Local 1-1937 is proud to offer the highest level of education to its members.  Whether you are a New Member  to the Union, or wanting to become a Shop Steward or a Health and Safety Committee member, USW has several courses designed specifically to meet your needs in our local.

The Local Union holds training courses in both the spring and the fall.
​All of our USW courses provide students with Certificates upon completion of each course.

USW is excited to offer in classroom learning again for;
​Stewards Level I and Level 2,  New Members, & Bullying and Harassment.  More Courses will be offered as they become available. 
​If you are interested in Shop Steward Training or New Member Education please complete and submit the form below and a copy will go to your Business Agent for approval.
Training is provided for members of USW Local 1-1937 at no cost to the member, and they will be reimbursed for lost time, travel and per-diems as per the Local Union Bylaws and Policies.

COURSE OBJECTIVES.
By the end of this course, you will;
  • Gain some tools and the confidence to do your job as a shop steward
  • Understand the role of a steward, your rights, and where stewards fit into the USW structure.
  • Understand the structure of  your Collective Agreement and how to use it.

STEWARDS IN ACTION LEVEL II COURSE OBJECTIVES
  • Practice techniques to engage and mobilize members in support of common goals.
  • Be able to build a Steelworker presence in the workplace and the wider community.
  • Understand how to work within the local Union.
  • Apply good communication, investigation, and judgment skills to complex grievance scenarios.
  • Describe the Duty of Fair Representation in practical terms.
  • Understand the role of a Steelworker Steward in dealing with harassment.
  • Identify options for dealing effectively with management.
  • Review some key concepts from Stewards in Action Level I
  • Continue to grow our Grievance handling and writing skills.
